A mantel makeover

Late one evening I decided to give my mantel a facelift --- working with what I already had so I'm not tempted to buy anything new. Some tell me this means I'm already nesting.  Who knows? I played with it for an hour or so while Tony was in class and ended up with this.

what it looked like before
sometimes less is more

We are currently looking for a new screen (or maybe even painting the current screen a nice dark color) and are even considering going without a screen and glass doors someday (as in when there are no potential toddlers running around). I've also been toying with the idea of painting the brick white, but there's no going back once you paint it.  I do love the look of white painted brick, but that's a big commitment.  Know what I mean?

Bowling, Cupcakes, Diaper Bags, and More

Let me just say that.... I'm back.  Well, my energy level that is.  No extreme exhaustion since Thursday. Tony was partying it up with old college friends out of town this weekend, and I kept myself very busy around here.  Saturday started with my usual--- waffles and nutella. Then Sam and I strolled through the neighborhood but just briefly because it's way too hot out.

I climbed on my treadmill after that.  Did I mention that I got a new treadmill?  It has a built in fan and Tony finally hung the tv on the wall.  I can walk forever if you give me a fan and some good shows to watch. This is what kept me going Saturday morning...

I also hit up the best store in Houston, Kuhl-Linscomb.  I browsed for about an hour, and may have purchased a few things.  It's easy to get lost in there, and so hard not to purchase everything.

After that I met a couple friends, Erin and Frankie, and their children for a bowl-a-thon benefiting Junior Achievement.  I got my baby fix for the week!

Bored yet?

Baby boutiques were calling my name this weekend, and I wanted to check out a couple of diaper bags some friends recommended.  There are two I really like. I have all the ordering information if any of my lovely aunts are reading and would like to purchase one as a gift for baby V.

Last but definitely not least, I stopped by the cupcake shop for one of  my best friend's 30th.  Thanks for giving me an excuse to eat a cupcake, Kristin, and for chatting it up with me today.

I had every intention of picking up cupcakes from the newly opened Sprinkles, but the line was crazy long and it was 90+ degrees out.  Energy or no energy, that ain't happening!

Can you tell I'm feeling better?

Da Bump

@ 11 weeks.

I started taking weekly pics a couple of weeks ago so I can track Baby V's progression of how he/she is slowly taking over ownership of my body.

My appointment with the high risk OB is scheduled for Friday, and the OB will be doing the high resolution ultrasound at that time.  I'm excited about the ultrasound and the opportunity to see Baby V, but I'm so anxious about the appointment.

I'm nervous because 1) I am seeing the high risk OB (she is considered one of the best in Houston, and I find that comforting but yet a bit intimidating at the same time) and 2) I hope all is well with the ultrasound.

The first trimester symptoms I was experiencing seemed to have resolved as I haven't had any the past few days.  Excuse me while I find some wood to knock on...

Happy Saturday,

Remembering when

A year ago Tony and I were wandering through Italy footloose and fancy-free. Our hardest decision was deciding which bottle of wine to order. Then again that wasn't even that difficult given that wine is cheaper than water in Italy---we could just order another bottle if we didn't like the first one.

Forget being footloose and fancy-free these days.  My thoughts are consumed with things like finding a daycare (and we've narrowed it down to two I might add and both with availability), cord blood banking, and birth classes.

Back to Italy.... we've been extremely sappy the past few days with comments like "one year ago we were doing this" and "remember when we did that..."  Disgusting, right?

I looked at our coffee table book and browsed through our old photos last night.  I must say it would've been easier to commemorate while enjoying a glass of wine or two.

We still have our bottle of wine we brought back from Como.  Maybe it'll be our celebratory wine once Baby V arrives.

Here are a few (ha!) of my favorite photos.

p.s. Every channel seems to be talking about Michael Jackson this week which also makes me a little sad. Hormonal much?  Well so what if I have Man in the Mirror on repeat.

Kitchen Island

Our kitchen is wide enough that it needs a little something in the middle but narrow enough that only the right size island would work.  Does that make sense?

Here's what I had my heart set on, but the dimensions weren't quite right.  I felt that it would be a bit too bulky for our kitchen.

So, I saw this small, yet perfect-size-for-our-kitchen, island in a home not too long ago.
After hearing it was from Ikea, Tony and I went to snatch one up.

Here's what it looked like before.

Here's the after.

A big shout out to Tony for painting it for me this past weekend.
We didn't think it would be safe for Baby V to inhale all those paint fumes.

Now I just need to add some shiny hardware to the drawers and maybe a holder for a hand towel on one end.

Bad blogger. Who me?

My husband just called me out on the fact that I haven't been posting as frequently.  Umm, hello, I'm pregnant!  Umm, hello, I'm tired.  Nope, not just tired... exhausted!  I hear the additional progesterone I'm taking is resulting in more exhaustion, but I'll do whatever I have to do.  I only have one more week left on the progesterone.  I think I can, I think I can...

And to think all this time I thought that women made up the whole notion of "pregnancy brain" and "pregnancy fatigue."

So please don't pick on the pregnant lady.  Tony was only joking.  In fact he's been so helpful and encouraging... grocery store runs, shoulder rubs, helping in the kitchen, snow cone runs every other day, and he even completed his honey-do list this weekend.  So what if it cost us $189 in the end (we got some wires mixed up when adding dimmers and had to call an electrician on Saturday evening...who knew the small wire in our kitchen controlled our entire master bedroom).

Long story short...I'm alive and will have some new home improvements and DIY projects to share soon.

As for now I'm headed to bed.  Yep, it's only 9 p.m.  Good night.

p.s.  My cousin, Robin, fractured her leg on Friday and had surgery to repair the break over the weekend.  She now has pulmonary emboli (blood clots developed post-op and the clots have moved to her lungs).  She could sure use some thoughts and prayers right now.  Thanks.

A hot weather essential

Can't. live. without. them.

And finally a snow cone stand is open just minutes from my house.

The red velvet & wedding cake mix I inhaled on Sunday was tasty.
Next up is the Georgia peach flavor... maybe this afternoon.

Nursery Ideas

So I may or may not have been saving pictures of nurseries for the past couple of years. I've noticed a constant trend in my collection... I'm drawn to more neutral nurseries with white bedding, tans, creams, and perhaps a pop of color on the windows. Here are my favorite nurseries.

This mirror... absolutely perfect.

Love the pop of blue on the windows.
For lighting, I'm thinking a chandelier if Baby V is a girl
and a lantern pendant if Baby V is a boy.

Not so neutral, but I love Erika's nursery.

Oh, if I should have a girl...
the pink ties and curtains.
My heart melts....

Going Green

Until recently Tony and I just couldn't commit to recycling (I know, I know... hangs head low in shame).  We just couldn't make a habit of it... well until this arrived...the "throw everything in" large rolling recycle bin. Good for Houston, good for the environment, and good for us.

We've already filled this baby up a number of times. This is a peek inside after our crawfish boil.  Drink much?

My first craving...

Well, my first true pregnancy craving that is.  I have had my normal cravings, but this is a real pregnancy related craving. How do I know?   I know because I can't take my mind off of it and because my brain already told my body that we aren't going to sleep tonight unless I have a piece of this today.  And I need a good night's sleep right? My hubby received a notification via e-mail at 8:00 a.m. this morning demanding that we have Cheesecake Factory for dinner tonight... just so I can indulge in this.
