product of the week: kiehl's facial cleanser

I've been using this Kiehl's facial cleanser for close to five years now, and I LOVE it. My sister tried it about a year ago and was easily hooked.  I usually buy the big bottle (which retails at $26.50--- but I usually stock up when it's on sale with the Houston Holiday Card discount) and it lasts me close to six months.  I do still use the Wonderbar two to three times a week, but I'm loyal to my Kiehl's using it every morning and every evening.

I did not receive compensation for this post. This post reflects my own personal opinions.

Today is the one year anniversary of my perinatologist appointment ...
the appointment during which she told me about Preston's broken heart and then held me as I cried on the exam table.

Even though our situation turned out much better than we expected and Preston's heart has been mended, July 22nd is a date that I will never forget.
Man, what a year. Was it tough?  The hardest year of my life.
Was it worth it? Absolutely!

There's a song out by Laura Story called "Blessings" that I can totally relate to these days. It goes a little like this...
That's a free printable above, by the way, that can be found here.
Tonight my little family and I are going to have fish tacos at the very same Berryhill we ate at last year on July 22nd. This year, though, we'll have plenty of smiles to share across the table instead of tears and looks of despair.

Have a great weekend, friends, and thanks for your continuous support over the past year.

calling all expecting mommies: a giveaway

The adorable PR rep (and friend) contacted me recently about a new pregnancy app, Your BFF During Pregnancy by Parent Prep School. Two moms in Austin, Texas put their heads together to come up with this iPhone app that allows expectant mothers to receive weekly advice and reminders to make pregnant life a lot easier.

Here's the spiel from their site:

"Your BFF During Pregnancy" is the only pregnancy app that syncs directly with your calendar. This app is also unique because after you enter your due date, you don't return to the app itself. You choose what day and time to receive the weekly reminders, and after you hit "sync," your iCalender is automatically populated with to-the-point tips and necessary tasks to complete before The Big Day.
We’re not MDs. So you won’t receive medical advice or facts like, “Your baby is the size of a peach today.” Sure, we loved getting that info when we were pregnant, but when it came to the truly practical advice, we had to rely on our girlfriends (such as take the CPR class before your bump becomes a beach ball, or stock your bathroom with Tucks Pads). You are exhausted, nauseated, suffering from pregnancy-brain, and just too stinkin’ busy to have to check back to other sources for a to-do list. Instead, just enter your due date and we do the rest.
I know I have quite a few of you expectant mommies who follow this blog so Pregnant Prep School provided me with a promo code for one reader and it allows the winner to download the entire app for free. (Please note that the app is currently just for iPhone users, but it will work with an iPad, too.)
To enter all you have to do is leave a comment on this post by Saturday, July 23rd. Please be sure that your comment includes your e-mail address so I can e-mail you with the promo code, and that's it.

until next year.

Know the worst part about vacations?
They must end and all too quickly it seems.
Our first vacation as a family of three was one for the record books, and a good time was had by all.

This is the view we woke up to each morning...
the Texas hill country.

And this ... our backyard.

I already miss these kiddos like crazy.

Our days looked a lot like this...

And our nights... full of adult beverages, baby monitors, and laughter.

We also did a little rodeoing @ Crider's.

We didn't want to leave, and Preston voiced his unhappiness about leaving a number of times on the car ride home.
Thank the Lord (and Erin and Allie) for our PraiseBaby DVD ... it helped maintain our sanity on the way home.

I think we definitely started a tradition and we're looking forward to next year's trip.

road trip.

We're outta here.
It's time for our very first family vacation (with some other very sweet families)
Wish us luck.

product of the week: the tonytail

I came across this faux hair piece at Sephora and decided to give it a try.

It's called the Tonytail. I like it so much that it's product of the week this week.  I've always loved a clean looking ponytail with a wrap around, but I can't tell you how many times I've stood in front of the mirror, arms burning from holding them up so long, trying to perfect the wrap around only to have it fall within minutes.

These days it seems like I sport a ponytail every.stinking.day. Thanks to the Tonytail I don't feel so bad about resorting to the ponytail.

This would be a real life shot of the tonytail and a real life (and blurry... sorry) picture of a six month old who was getting both of his bottom teeth at the same time hence the sad face.

P.S. Isn't the name cute?

The makers of the Tonytail did not compensate me for this post. These are my own personal opinions.

freudian slips.

Source: weheartit.com via Tiffanie on Pinterest
Ok, so Mr. Gherkin keeps a running list of my stupidisms and my ever growing freudian slips. He really gets a kick out of these, and thankfully I've grown to laugh at myself.  Anyhow, he insists his list be made public now via a blog post.  So here goes.

Here's the top of the list...

Freeze that cake out aka thaw that cake out.
Like a rabbit jumping on his prey (in reference to Carter pouncing on one of his toys).
Don't get all high pitched with me meaning don't raise your voice.
Fake believe-  what I really meant to say was make believe.
Are Snoop Dogg and Nate Dogg brothers? (true story)
Is Canada a country or a continent? (hangs head low in shame but in my defense the question came out all wrong... I know/knew Canada isn't a continent)

If that isn't enough, here's the next page on his list:

I don't understand the legit of that.
Watch out for the bike-a-list! (as a cyclist speeds past us)
Can you fast forward it? (in referring to live television one evening)
Snow leaves (That slipped out as Hurricane Ike beat down on us a couple of years ago & alcohol may or may not have been involved)

And the most recent (drum roll please....)

Guess the tooth fairy comes tonight in talking about Preston's first tooth.  Mr. Gherkin immediately gave me that look. You know the look where he hangs his head low in shame while shaking it slowly side to side in disbelief and reminds me the tooth fairy only pays a visit when someone loses a tooth.  Duh, I knew that!

So that's me. The real, unedited me.
The great thing is that some of these were years ago and some within the past couple of week, but at any given time either of us can remember one and just bust out laughing.  Then we find ourselves laughing even harder as we try to explain why we are laughing.

pinnable me: pineapple love.

Y'all know I love all things pineapple, right?

So I'm linking up for pinnable me today at Paw Prints and Pastry Bags to show you my new pineapple loves from pinterest.

How adorable are those pineapple cupcakes?
Yes, please, I'll take that pineapple necklace.
A pineapple would be appropriate for P's first Halloween.  No?
And the pineapples in a vase.  Genius!

Have a good weekend!

sprucing things up.

Until last week a plain, old boring shade had been occupying our laundry room. It's been there since before we moved in. I'm not a huge fan of it, but hey it's a laundry room and secondly I've mentioned that Mr. Gherkin put me on a budget, right!?

So I ordered a monogrammed decal from this etsy seller (for a very reasonable price and on sale) and threw it on there.

The application was super easy ... the key was taking the shade down and rolling it out on a flat surface before applying.

I like how the decal dressed it up, and of course a monogram looks great on anything.

Thanks for all the sweet comments on the previous post about Preston's baptism. You guys rock!

preston's baptism

It was a brilliant and blessed day!
I mean minus the mild virus that Preston developed late last week and his first tooth breaking through (no big deal, right?) it was a perfect day and he was the sweetest baby (although certainly not the happiest) before, during, and after his baptism.

As much as I hate for him to be sick and to think about the discomfort of teething he completely melted my heart this weekend.  He preferred to be held and would just lay his head on my shoulder.  He wasn't shy about still sharing those smiles though.

Oh yeah about that baptism.

Here are a few (ha!) pictures from the day.

Definitely P's biggest fan.

We had family and a few friends over afterwards.  Here's a few of the decorations from lunch.
mint lemon tea with print from jones design co.

I found an old piece of trim left over from our remodel to display Preston's baptism pics.

And the guests...
P's great grandfather and the best-brisket-smoker ever. Isn't he cute in his red, white, and blue?
taking a break from it all in his nursery with his Gr (pronounced grrr and short for Grandpa Randal)
Ryan (a good friend's son) and Hunter (our nephew) were fast friends.

We hated to see such a sweet day come to an end. We spent the rest of the evening just hanging out longing for the daylight to continue and savoring the sweet memories of the day.  I love this picture and how the rays of sunlight are coming through the window.  I like to think it's his Mimi (my mom) letting us know she's watching from above.

happy half-year birthday, Preston!

It's 10:11 a.m. here which means that exactly 6 months ago Preston took his first (and perfect) breath in this world.

Turned out that his 6 month sticker was blue and white so I threw in some red for the 4th of July festivities.

Looks who's sitting up on his own.  We stay close by just in case he takes a topple.
"Why are you hiding in my closet, Daddy?  I don't need your help.  I can do this all by myself."

Happy 6 months, Sweet P!

happy 4th.

Hope your holiday is full of fireworks and barbeque.

pinterest love: quotes

I'm finally catching the hang of Pinterest (it only took me 6 months), and I'm officially addicted. Here's some of the favorite pins and quotes.
