the olympics and cheating.

Aly Raisman's parents cracked me up in the video below.  I get so nervous just sitting here on my couch, watching a complete stranger compete.  I can't even imagine sitting in the stands watching a family member compete.  No way.  No how.

Mr. Gherkin is one of those who checks the medal count and the olympic updates every five minutes. It drives me nuts. He leaves no room for surprise. I call it cheating.  Maybe it's not technically cheating,  but it certainly takes the fun out of it.

It's most annoying when there's a close race, like when two swimmers are neck and neck, and I'm whooping and hollering, cheering on USA, and Mr. Gherkin pipes in, "I know what happens here."  Just by the way he says it I can tell what the outcome will be.  It's so annoying.

I literally just plopped down on the couch tonight to finally tune in to the olympics, he grabs his iPad and brags that he knows what happens tonight.  So I'm 'bout to take this boy out back.  Be back soon.

life as we know it.

What a stupid crazy week!

First up a pipe above our laundry room bursts.  Again.  Second time in six months.  Fun, fun!
So we've decided to replace the pipes in the whole house.  After 3 estimates, we've picked a company that should be done in the next couple of weeks.  All that means holes in sheetrock which must be patched and then repainted.  Fun times!

Top that off with a root canal this morning.  Know how to get through a root canal?  Turn on Pandora (I chose the David Crowder Band station) and let it blare through your earphones.  It also helps that my dentist is good looking and funny.

Now I'm just sore.  It stinks. And I made plans to eat Mexican food with friends tonight.  Going to a mexican food joint and not being able to eat chips is just plain torture.  Like fingernails on a chalkboard kind of torture.

My dad had a fistula placed in his arm in preparation for hemodialysis.  Proud of you, dad, for going through with it.

On a brighter note, I picked up some of the glow sticks from the dollar bins at Target after seeing all the kiddos on Pinterest playing with them in the bath tub.  Well, Preston loves his glow sticks.
He loved them so much that he fell asleep with one in each hand last night.  Future raver?  I hope not.
I'm stoked about the opening ceremonies and the start of the 2012 Olympics tonight.

Have a great weekend!

where we enter.

Technically we don't really enter here most days.  Only our guests (mostly our beloved nanny) enter through the front door.  We usually come in the back, through the mudroom/laundry room.  But who cares about logistics, right?

looking out from the formal living area, which I use as an office, towards the entryway. You can also see Preston's art work wall.

Bought my first umbrella stand from Zgallerie during a store closing clearance.  Score.
Had to buy my second one at full price after the dog freaked because someone rang the door bell and knocked it over.  Gotta love dogs.

view from the front door.

Don't you love the swanky trim we inherited with the house.  I wanted to take it down immediately, but a friend/contractor made me promise not to.  He swore it be a new trend before long.  I can't say it's trend-worthy yet, but it's grown on me. It's definitely one of a kind, though.
Painting this chandelier has been on my to-do list for 3 years.  I haven't pulled the trigger yet because I can't decide what color.  What do you guys think?  Oil-rubbed bronze or a fun color like torquoise?  I've got one chance to do it and do it right.  Mr. Gherkin says he's only removing and replacing all those crystals one and only one time.

2nd annual Hunt trip.

I'm so sad that our Hunt trip has come and gone.  I want a house in Hunt, Texas asap (you hear me, hubsand).
our sweet little munchkins.
Our long weekend consisted of daily dips in the Guadalupe River (which just happens to be our back yard), moms' hour, kayaking, canoe rides, a couple snake spottings, good food, charades and mucho wine consumption.  In case you're wondering the girls totally kicked the guys booties in charades... that just has to be mentioned here on the blog, for public record.

We aren't really sure how all of our children have the exact same color hair.
G is missing from this picture, but he has the exact same hair color. It's kind of crazy.
Crider's Rodeo and Dance Hall.
our daily mom afternoon  hour on the Relaxation Station.
He's obsessed with trucks.  And ducks totally ride in the back of trucks, right?
So a few hours after we shot pics of our kids in the raft, we caught this creep (see below) swimming in the very same area.  Totally creepy, right?

our kiddos.

hi ho, hi ho, it's off to work we go.

more Crider's and the mooo-cow.

Thanks for making their matching pjs, Samantha.  The girls need matching champs of charades shirts next year.
Don't they look like they're in trouble?  They're actually mesmerized by Mr. Lloyd.  He seriously has a way with these kiddos, mine especially.

So thankful for sweet babies, sweet friends, and sweet families.

Until next year...

Of the above, I plead guilty.  I promise to pay more attention to my commas. Promise.

On that note, thank and think are two words I struggle with and often interchange (and yes, I know the difference between the two).  Not then or than.  Not their or there or they're.  But think and thank. Silly, I know.  My sincerest apology if you've ever received a card from me that said think you instead of thank you.   I can't explain it either.

Speaking of cards, sent my best friend of sixteen plus years a birthday card recently that went something like this front: we're growing old together inside:  you first.  And she's younger than me, y'all! I knew that. Really, I did.  Not sure what I was thinking when I bought the card, filled it out and then mailed it.  I'm thinking (did you catch that correct word usage, huh?) that I must have birthed all my brain cells with my placenta.

If you've ever been in water with me when I can't see my feet (especially if something, probably a great white, grazes my leg) then you know this is so me.  Must see my feet at all times, people.

Above would be my coffee that is waiting me every.single.morning. courtesy of the Gherkin.  Guilty of being a little spoiled here.

Yep, guilty of the above also. Though not apologetic about this one.  I'm sure I've been blocked more than I care to know, but I don't really care though.  Guilty and not concerned. :)

I will also admit my car now smells like fall.  I found some left over Leaves air fresheners from Bath & Body Works and popped one of those bad boys in.  Not ashamed to admit that once my vacay is over next week, I'm going to need football and fall in my life asap.

Also guilty of heading out of town for a little r&r in the Texas Hill Country.  Not sorry about that one either.  Hope y'all have a great week.

what's on my mind.

Sitting in church this morning and all I could think about was this ...

It was two years ago and just a couple of weeks after Preston's diagnosis, I thought I could make it through a church service only to walk in and break down after seeing a little blonde boy sitting in front of us, jon jon on and all.  I cried tears and prayed prayers while wondering if I would ever have that.

A year later, in the very same church, we baptized Preston.  A healthy, happy, and very much alive Preston.

And today.  Today, I walked my little jon jon-wearing boy, with blonde-streaked hair (thanks to summer), down to the front of the church so he could participate in the children's ministry.

What I went through two years ago wasn't easy, but it sure was worth it.

I say all that to say, if you're reading this and are struggling with something in your life, hold fast.  Whatever it is (divorce, illness, death, substance abuse, infertility, or finances) know this, believe this, cling to this ...

where we bathe.

Let's start this photo-heavy post off with the master bath. Bathrooms are seriously hard to photograph thus the billion and one pictures.

This is the one room in the house that we definitely want to re-do. So other than adding my personal touches and changing the hardware, this room is the same as when we moved in.  Same cracked tiles, same boring paint, same brass shower.  One day though we'll get it renovated.  Until then, I'll just keep watering that money tree.

I love to frame photos that we took back in the day when we used to travel (love you, Preston). This is my photograph of the Colosseum during our trip to Italy 3 years ago.
And a photograph I took in Lake Como while the Gherk and I were enjoying the view and a glass of vino.
Mr. Gherkin's side of the vanity - minus all of his shaving gear.

Next up, the guest bath which also serves as the "man" bathroom according to the Gherkin and Preston.  I always laugh about that because nothing in this room is masculine.  At all.

We inherited a gray tile with a hint of pink when we bought this house.  I initially thought it was horrific, but once I got the pink striped wallpaper down and painted the walls Behr Sea Salt, I've decided that I like it.
This room has mega storage which I love, love, love.

Since our budget doesn't allow for nice pieces of art, I created some DIY art that I printed on high quality paper stock and framed.

I have a thing for drying and keeping old rose bouquets. I've mentioned my hoarding tendencies, right?  I dry my roses and then tie them with nice ribbon or burlap in this situation and hang them throughout the house. I sometimes write when and who and for what occasion the flowers were given on a tag so that I'll remember the gesture and the significance.  This particular bouquet was sent to us in July 2010 just after finding out about Preston's heart condition.

Funny thing about this bathroom is that it was two sinks, one in the toilet and shower area and one in the vanity area.  At least you know that we have clean hands around here.  :)
More DIY artwork : fine paper from Paper Source, a free printable found on pinterest (I couldn't find the source at the moment so please share if you know), and Ikea RIBBA frames
